How IFAs can unlock a smooth ride

Marc O’Sullivan
Head of Investments - Wesleyan

Wesleyan

Wesleyan Group has made its flagship With Profits Fund available to Independent Financial Advisers for the first time.

It’s a first in the Wesleyan Group’s 180-year history – and it has the potential to bring great benefits for both Independent Financial Advisers (IFA) and their clients.

Wesleyan’s With Profits Fund has first been made available to IFAs using Novia’s platform.

The fund was previously only directly accessible online or through Wesleyan’s direct advice team.

It’s already proving to be immensely popular – particularly among those IFAs whose clients have a moderate risk appetite.

And the reasons for the fund’s success are simple.

For a start, it’s a multi-asset Fund with a portfolio that typically has up to 65% allocated to UK and overseas equities, with the remainder mostly consisting of fixed interest, property and cash.

The Fund’s property holdings cover a range of different assets located throughout the UK, including offices, industrial units, retail shops and other specialist buildings such as farms, restaurants, bars and hotels.

Wesleyan Group also has a long-standing strategy of maintaining high levels of equity exposure which offers strong potential for long-term competitive returns – a strategy that has delivered a cumulative 10-year return of 102%.*

Smoothing the ups and downs of investing

Wesleyan’s With Profits Fund on the Novia platform also has a simple, transparent structure.

With daily unit pricing, investors can track how the fund is performing and how much their investment is worth on any given day.

Importantly, there will be no market value reductions applied, which can be complicated mechanisms to explain to clients.

The fund could also prove ideally suited to those investors who seek greater long-term consistency.

It employs a process called smoothing which reduces the impact of day-to-day market volatility.

In essence, this means some of the fund’s returns are held back during times of strong performance and favourable market conditions and then ‘released’ as a cushion during periods of weaker market and fund performance.

At Wesleyan, the formula to smooth out fluctuations in the asset value enables rapid response to large market movements.

This avoids the need for sharp or unexpected corrections, which can be more commonplace elsewhere in the With Profits marketplace.

Underpinned with financial strength

Wesleyan Group’s award-winning Investments Team can provide IFAs and their clients with peace of mind.

The With Profits Fund is managed by Marc O’Sullivan, who has almost 20 years’ industry experience.

Marc is supported in his work by a highly experienced team of fund managers, property managers and investment analysts and a socially responsible investment team.

All of Wesleyan’s directly managed funds adhere to robust environment, social and governance (ESG) principles designed to avoid harm, have a positive impact and drive change – an approach that has been externally recognised with Wesleyan being crowned winners of the ‘Responsible Investor of the Year’ award at the 2022 Insurance Asset Risk Awards.**

What’s more, Wesleyan’s mutual status and financial strength also means that, in addition to the returns generated by the Investments Team, investors’ returns can also be boosted through a share of the profits.

Part of this comes from the potential distribution of surplus capital – and investors in the With Profits Fund typically receive a share of this.

Growing demand

Early indications are that there will be steadily increasing demand for this mixed asset fund with smoothing features.

The combination of the higher than usual equity content, no exit fees and the transparent nature of the fund due to it being on the Novia platform, enables IFAs to offer all that investors have traditionally appreciated about With Profits.

The greater consistency of returns also means that both advisers and their clients now have access to a strong, actively managed Fund with a proven track record over the longer term.

The performance figures shown above are based upon the net return on the With Profits Growth Fund Series A after charges are deducted and include the effects of smoothing. The return individual investors have received on their own investments will be different due to, for example, the amount invested.

Please note that past performance is not a reliable guide to future performance and the value of your investment can go down as well as up, so you could get back less than you have invested.
